Slow Food NYC Neighborhood Farm Program

What is it?

SFNYC is adopting community gardens in areas of New York City where residents have limited access to fresh produce and turning them into urban educational farms .

Why are we doing it?

Education: We are creating and maintaining these “pocket” farms” so that youths from the neighborhood can spend their summers actively learning how to grow good food, be part of a team, prepare healthy nutritious meals, and participate in building stronger communities.

Access: We will increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables in these communities by having youth farmers share what they harvest. They will do this by providing their families with fresh produce and by running small farmstands.

Awareness: Youth farmers will spread their knowledge about the importance of eating real, healthy food with their families, friends, and the community

Nutrition: Youth farmers will learn to eat in a more nutritious manner.
